Sixth Form Extra Curricular
In Moulton School Sixth Form we believe that it is essential for you to continue developing skills that will strengthen your university or job application. To help to support your development beyond your academic subjects, you have the opportunity to take part in many additional activities. These can be exciting, challenging and very rewarding and we encourage you to participate fully in order to get the most out of your time in the Sixth Form.
Citizenship
Aspects of citizenship are delivered through the PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) programme. Students are active in learning about and questioning issues surrounding rights and responsibilities, government and democracy, identities and communities. All students can access the PSHE programme through their tutorial sessions each Tuesday morning. This is delivered by tutors and experts from outside agencies, for example Shelter and Aim Higher. Politicians have also visited and discussed key issues with students. The PSHE programme also allows you access to organisations that provide information about health, safety and ways in which to enhance your ability to enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution and achieve economic well-being.
In addition, citizenship activities can be experienced through the enrichment activities described below. Altogether these activities add extra elements to your experience in the Sixth Form that strengthens your portfolio and widens your perspective of the communities in which we live.
Sixth Form Enrichment Activities
The PSE programme aims to meet statutory guidelines regarding citizenship activities in post-16 education. At Moulton School Sixth Form, we have also responded to the student voice through the Sixth Form Council in order to develop activities that the students find interesting, rewarding, informative and useful to their daily lives. There are a wide range of enrichment activities offered and students are encouraged to take part in as many as possible. Some of these are listed below:
Sixth Form Student Council
The Sixth Form Council meets every two weeks. Two students from each form group are elected and represent the views of their peers. The Council discusses issues raised by pupils and staff and includes planning additional activities, improving the Sixth Form environment and supporting main school events.
Voluntary Work
All students have non-contact teaching periods and we strongly encourage students to use this time effectively. We work with Northampton Volunteers Youth Action Group to offer students the opportunity to work in a number of voluntary roles and receive certification in recognition of their efforts. Students currently participating in the scheme have worked with younger pupils in the school by supporting their reading, coaching in their specialist sport or supporting staff in the classroom.
Holocaust Education Trust
Students in Year 12 are invited by the Holocaust Education Trust to take part in the 'Lessons from Auschwitz' course. This includes a visit to Auschwitz and a meeting with survivors from the Holocaust. Participants then make presentations to students in Year 9.
Educational Visits
Educational visits are found in many subject areas and are often linked to coursework components study at AS and A2 level. Art, Biology, Geography, Business Studies, Sociology, Economics, Drama, History and Music all contain day trips or practical fieldwork visits that support the subject specifications and bring to life your A-level subjects.
Paired Reading and House Support: All students in the Sixth Form are placed in one of four Houses - Althorpe, Holdenby, Rockingham and Sulgrave. These Houses are an integral part of the whole school community, from age 11 to 19. Sixth Form students have the opportunity to contribute to the school community by helping lower school pupils with their reading. This is rewarding for both those assisting and those supported. Mentoring is also an option and many students from Years 7-11 have benefitted from the experience and support of Sixth Form students.
Work Related Learning and Activities
To help to support students in gaining experience of work in their prospective career, many students carry out work experience during their non-contact time or in a week's block. For students applying to university for courses such as veterinary science, medicine, teaching, law, architecture and others in the health sector a level of work experience in their chosen field is an essential part in preparing for your university course and strengthening your application.
Residential Trips
There are trips that are available to students during their time in the Sixth Form. This includes a winter sports holiday during February half-term to Andorra where you can learn to ski or snowboard. There is an annual educational visit organised by the History department, but open to all those interested. Recent destinations have included Rome, Venice, Prague, Budapest and Vienna. Finally, students also participate in the World Challenge programme every two years. Previous students have visited Vietnam, Botswana, Zambia and Malawi.
Sports
Students are all able to access the facilities at the Sports Centre. There is an excellent gym which is used throughout the day by students in their non-contact time. Rugby and football are both followed by boys in the Sixth form through county championship competitions.
The aim at Moulton School is to make the Sixth Form an experience that students will reflect upon as rewarding and fulfilling. The information above is just a brief outline of some of the most popular enrichment activities. Many students make individual requests to take part in courses, develop activities and organise events and we support these where appropriate.
