Modern Foreign Languages

The MFL department is located on the second floor of the main block. Our languages teachers are proud of the consistently high levels of achievement our students accomplish. We aim to provide all students with a thorough grounding in all four skill areas: listening, reading, speaking and writing and develop their appreciation of the cultures and customs of Spanish and/or French speaking countries.

Key Stage 3

Year 7

  • All students study Spanish.
  • All students receive three hours of language a week.

Year 8

  • The top two sets study a second Language while sets 3 and 4 continue with their first language.
  • Students study each language for two hours, so they have either 2 or 4 hours of language learning depending on their set. Students studying 2 hours of Spanish a week, also study media studies. For more information see English.

In the first two years of languages students which learn the basics of how the language works and they will be able to refer to things in the past, present and future tenses. They will do this through such topics as:

  • Personal Information – your age, appearance and likes and dislikes.
  • School and family
  • School, home and animals
  • Food
  • Local Area
  • Lifestyle
  • Holiday
  • Sport and Leisure
  • Daily Life
  • Media
  • Technology
  • Issues for teenager
  • Health and diet

On average they will be assessed each half term on their reading and listening skills and each term on their speaking and writing skills.

Parental advice – Building up a wide knowledge of vocabulary is vital for a student’s success in languages – they should be encouraged to spend 10 minutes daily revising their vocabulary. There are some excellent websites to help students in their learning – our favourite at the moment is QUIZLET.
The school provides homework booklets to allow students to reinforce and extend their learning – if the parents want students to write in their books, which is advisable, then the books need to be paid for.

In years 9, 10 and 11 students receive 5 lessons per fortnight, usually with one teacher. We follow the AQA syllabus for MFL, this is split into 3 themes with numerous topics under each theme.

1. Identity and Culture

  • Relationships with Family and Friends
  • Marriage/Partnership
  • Social Media
  • Mobile Technology
  • Music
  • Cinema & TV
  • Food and Eating Out
  • Sport
  • Customs and Festivals in France & French Speaking Countries

2. Local, national and global areas of interest

  • Home, Town, Neighbourhood & Region
  • Charity/Voluntary Work
  • Healthy/Unhealthy Living
  • The Environment

3. Current and future study and employment

  • My Studies
  • Life at School/College
  • Education Post-16
  • Jobs, Career Choices and Ambitions

Students will be examined in all 4 skills at the end of the course so in order to prepare students for this, on average, they will be assessed each half term on their reading and listening skills and each term on their speaking and writing skills.

Parental advice - It is vital that students learn vocabulary on a daily basis. We provide our students with a vocabulary booklet which contains all the words set by the examination board. It would help students if parents encouraged daily learning of this. There are numerous sites to help students with their learning and there are many clips on youtube which explain grammar points. We also continue to recommend Quizlet for vocabulary learning. We also recommend the use of Wordreference as an online dictionary.
